Monobody

is an instrumental post-rock / jazz-fusion project from Chicago made up of instrumentalists Collin Clauson (Keyboards), Al Costis (Bass), Conor Mackey (Guitar), Steve Marek (Bass), and Nnamdi Ogbonnaya (Drums).

Monobody approaches music with the mentality that a unique identity emerges from the sum of its parts. With its members coming from diverse musical backgrounds, the group has found common ground in a sonic curiosity that allows each instrumentalist to add a unique contribution to create something special and memorable. Although the songs are thoroughly composed, there is always room left for improvisation and experimentation—an approach that is evident in arrangements defined by both exacting precision and emotive dynamic surprises. Hoping to push the limits of their creativity and continuously write music that keeps themselves and the listener engaged, Comma, the group’s third full-length LP, was written over the course of a few years following 2018’s Raytracing. Recorded almost entirely live at Russian Recording in Bloomington, Indiana, the album presents the band in the most natural way possible and reflects the group’s formidable live show better than any previous work. The album art and song titles of Comma center around a Butterfly theme. Butterflies represent the flowing, rise-and-fall dynamics of the 7 songs (all named after types of butterflies), and also pay homage to the transformative growth that Monobody has gone through across three LPs. Comma encapsulates the lifecycle of a caterpillar: a simple, delicate organism entering its chrysalis, transforming, and emerging into the air as a fluttering, colorful new creature.
